Thai Beef Salad (Beef Laab)
This refreshing beef salad is full of flavor. It has a hint of spice from the Thai peppers, hint of lime juice, a nutty flavor from the rice powder, and is savory from the fish sauce.
This dish is usually served with sticky rice or fresh veggies.
I made this dish with pan fried beef, but it is easily made with grilled beef or ground chicken.
For my marinade, I used vegan fish sauce; however, if you love the taste of fish sauce please include this in your dish instead. Fish sauce is the traditional sauce that would be used in this dish.
How to make ground rice powder
In a small pan add uncooked rice (usually sticky rice), I used brown rice. Turn stove on to low heat and allow rice to cook for about 10-15 minutes. The rice will change to slightly white and brown in color. After rice has cooled down, then use a mortar and pestle and grind rice. This will form your rice powder. Store in an airtight container. This ground rice powder taste great with sauces also!
How to make Thai beef salad:
Marinate beef with fish sauce for about 15 minutes in a medium bowl.
In a large pan add cooking oil and turn the stove on to medium heat. Add thinly sliced beef once the pan becomes hot. This will allow nice char on the beef. Cook beef for a few minutes on each side until cooked to your liking.
Add cooked beef to a large bowl.
Add red onions, green onions, cilantro, mint, rice powder, ground red peppers, lime juice, fish sauce, Thai peppers, and sugar to the beef. Stir well. If you like your meat tastier then you can add more fish sauce to your liking.
Serve with sticky rice or fresh veggies like cucumber, cabbage, and mint. Enjoy!
